The Failure at God School, From The Apothecary Diaries Author, Is Getting a TV Anime
The Failure at God School is officially making the jump from manga to television, as a new anime adaptation of Hyuganatsu and Modomu Akagawara’s supernatural school series has been announced.
The announcement was made alongside the launch of an official website and social media accounts for the project, as well as the first teaser visual. The promotional artwork features protagonist Nagi Hibiya alongside Tsukuyomi and Tota Eto, offering fans the first look at the characters in their upcoming animated form.
The series is written by Hyuganatsu, best known internationally as the creator of The Apothecary Diaries, while the manga is illustrated by Modomu Akagawara, whose previous work includes Ani Tomo. The Failure at God School began serialization in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine in August 2021.
A school where becoming a god is a qualification
The story takes place in a version of modern Japan where supernatural abilities are treated almost like an official profession.
People capable of performing miracles are classified as Himiko, but possessing supernatural abilities alone is not enough to become a god. Those who want to use the title must obtain the necessary certification.
At the center of the story is Nagi Hibiya, an ordinary high school student whose family shrine is facing a serious problem following the death of her grandmother.
Nagi needs someone capable of taking on the role of the shrine's deity, but her options are limited. Her brother, who inherited the family's divine abilities, is largely unwilling to leave his room or pursue the certification required to become a god.
Things take an unexpected turn when Nagi becomes involved with the prestigious Kannagara Academy, a school attended by people who possess extraordinary supernatural abilities.
Despite apparently lacking the abilities expected from its students, Nagi finds herself surrounded by individuals who seem to recognize that there is more to her than meets the eye.
Among them is Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, one of the highest-ranking gods in the country, who appears to take a particular interest in Nagi.
More details are still to come
While the television adaptation has now been officially confirmed, the production committee has not yet revealed several important details.
The animation studio, director, voice cast and premiere date remain unknown at the time of the announcement. It is therefore still too early to determine when the series will actually debut.
The announcement does, however, mark an important moment for the franchise.
The manga has continued its run in Hana to Yume, with its 15th collected volume released around the time of the anime announcement. The franchise also has a novel series published under Seikaisha's FICTIONS imprint.
Hyuganatsu also shared a message celebrating the adaptation, expressing her excitement at finally seeing characters such as Nagi, Takeru, Tsukuyomi and Tota moving and speaking on screen. Akagawara likewise thanked the readers, editors and production team, while saying that she is looking forward to seeing the characters come to life as an anime.
For now, The Failure at God School joins the growing list of manga receiving television adaptations, with fans left waiting for the next major announcement.
With its supernatural setting, academy environment and a story built around the unusual idea of officially licensed gods, the upcoming adaptation will have plenty of material to work with once production details are finally revealed.
